We were pleasantly surprised by Arles. It is a small town—significantly smaller than Béziers—yet it boasts a diverse cultural scene and a clearly visible alternative vibe and a beautiful, small, historic old town.
This is undoubtedly due to the *École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie* and the annual photography festival, *Les Rencontres de la Photographie*, which is renowned far beyond the country’s borders.
Perpignan isn’t very far from Béziers; you could easily drive there and back in a day.
But every now and then it’s nice to get out of town, see different faces, different shops, different streets, so we spent two days in Perpignan.
It’s a bit more of a city than Béziers and has a different atmosphere. Just a break from everyday life.
Whenever we’re in Perpignan, we always enjoy eating at Lazare Escarguel. It’s a great restaurant with fantastic food, and at €32 for the three-course lunch menu, it’s really affordable.

Exhibitions are regularly held at the gallerie „La Folie des Arts,“ of Catherine Fayal in Béziers, and are very popular and attract a lot of art-lovers and friends.
On April 10, 2026, the opening of the exhibition „Les Arbres“ – „Trees“ – featuring works by Laura Vassilu took place.
jeden Freitag findet auf der Allée-Paul-Riquet in Béziers der farbenfrohe Blumenmarkt statt. Schnittblumen, Topfpflanzen, Gemüse und Kräuter werden angeboten. Flanieren, Blumen für die Liebste kaufen, Kaffee trinken, Bekannte treffen – ein Treffpunkt in der Stadt, jeden Freitag.
Der 165m lange Tunnel de Malpas wurde 1681 eröffnet und war der erste Tunnel für Schiffe. Um weitere lange Umwege des Canal du Midi auf dem Weg zum Mittelmeer zu vermeiden, entschloss man man ca. 10 km vor Bézier den Colline de Malpas (übersetzt in etwa: „Hügel der schlechten Passage“) zu untertunneln.
Der Tunnel ist heute ein geschichtliches Baudenkmal und eine Touristenattraktion.

Leider habe ich versäumt mich registrieren zu lassen und konnte deshalb nicht wählen. Aber sicher beim nächsten Mal.
Robert Menard wurde hier in Béziers mit 65,6% der Stimmen im ersten Wahlgang für vier weitere Jahre als Bürgermeister gewählt. Er startet damit seine dritte Amtszeit.

While in Germany, especially in the major cities, the fireworks displays are causing near-civil war, the turn of the year in France is very peaceful and cozy.
