Die Feria 2025 in Béziers ist vorbei…
Endlich… leider…!?!? Hmmmmm???
Ich kenne kaum jemanden der keine klare Meinung zur Feria hat. Man liebt sie, oder man haßt sie.
Die Feria sind 5 Tage Ausnahmezustand in Beziers. Auf der Allée Paul Riquet, dem Place Jean-Jaures und der Av. Saint Saens bis zu den Arenes ist alles abgesperrt und es „tobt der Bär“.
Party, Essen, Trinken, Musik, Spektakel. 1 Million Menschen besuchen die Feria angeblich während der 5 Tage. Eine gigantische Zahl für eine Stadt mit nur 80.000 Einwohnern. Die Feria ist bekannt weit über die Stadtgrenzen Béziers hinaus und zieht Menschen aus ganz Frankreich nach Béziers. Werbung für diese schöne Stadt, Geld und Renomée.
Für die Menschen, die im Stadtzentrum wohnen ist die Feria aber durchaus eine Zumutung. Man kommt nicht, oder nur schlecht zu seiner Wohnung weil das Zentrum teilweise abgesperrt ist. Päckchen und Pakete kommen nicht an, weil die Lieferfahrzeuge nicht in die Stadt kommen. Lärm und Menschenmassen Tag und Nacht. Manche meiner Bekannten verlassen die Stadt während der Feria, was ich durchaus verstehen kann.
Ähnlich sieht es bei den Geschäften aus. Während z. B. die Boulangerie Crystal während der Feria 24 Std./Tag geöffnet hat, schließen andere Geschäfte während der Zeit komplett, denn trotz 1 Mio. Besucher verkaufen sie nichts. Es geht halt nur um „Fressen, Saufen, Party“.
Auch wenn man kein Freund von zu viel Alkohol und Volksfestessen ist kann man bei der Feria trotzdem ein paar schöne Stunden verleben. Es gibt tolle Konzerte und Musikdarbietungen und man kann sich durchaus mal ein paar Stunden im Strudel der Menschen durch die Straßen der Stadt treiben lassen.
Und… 5 Tage im Jahr, auch wenn man es nicht mag…. lass die anderen doch ihren Spaß haben. Leben und leben lassen.
Ein großer Kritikpunkt der Feria ist natürlich der Stierkampf. Da werden am Samstag Abend mal eben 9 Stiere in der Arena getötet, rein zu Belustigung der Zuschauer.
Natürlich gibt es dagegen Proteste und die versucht man von offizieller Seite aus zu verhindern und zu verbieten. Ein Gericht hat aber entschieden, dass diese Proteste während der Feria stattfinden dürfen und die Stadt diese nicht verbieten darf. Die Zeitung „Midi Libre“ schrieb von einer „Ohrfeige für den Bürgermeister M. Menard“
Das Argument der Veranstalter und Unterstützer des Stierkampfes ist: „Das ist Tradition“. Ok, kann man so sehen, muss man aber nicht. In Frankreich war es lange Zeit auch Tradition Guillotinen auf Marktplätzen aufzubauen und Menschen zu köpfen. Das macht man heute auch nicht mehr.
Andererseits werden jeden Tag Schweine, Hühner, Rinder zu hundertausenden gequält und unter ganz schelchten Bedingungen gehalten nur damit wir Fleisch fü 4,99 das Kilo kaufen können und kaum einen regt es auf.

I hardly know anyone who doesn’t have a clear opinion about the Feria. You either love it or you hate it.
The Feria is a five-day state of emergency in Béziers. Everything from Allée Paul Riquet, Place Jean-Jaures, and Av. Saint Saens to the Arenes is cordoned off, and it’s a real roar.
Partying, food, drinks, music, and spectacle. Reportedly, 1 million people attend the Feria during the five days. A gigantic number for a city with only 80,000 inhabitants. The Feria is known far beyond the city limits of Béziers and draws people from all over France to Béziers. It’s advertising for this beautiful city, money, and reputation.
For people who live in the city center, however, the Feria is quite an imposition. It’s impossible, or difficult, to get to your apartment because the center is partially cordoned off. Parcels and packages don’t arrive because the delivery vehicles can’t get into town. Noise and crowds day and night. Some of my friends leave the city during the Feria, which I can certainly understand.
It’s a similar story with the shops. While the Crystal bakery, for example, is open 24 hours a day during the Feria, other shops close completely because, despite the 1 million visitors, they don’t sell anything. It’s all about „eating, drinking, and partying.“
Even if you’re not a fan of too much alcohol and festival food, you can still spend a few enjoyable hours at the Feria. There are great concerts and musical performances, and you can definitely let yourself drift through the city streets for a few hours in the whirl of people.
And… 5 days a year, even if you don’t like it… let others have their fun. Live and let live.
A major criticism of the Feria is, of course, the bullfight. Nine bulls are killed in the arena on Saturday evening, purely for the amusement of the spectators.
Of course, there are protests against this, and the authorities are trying to prevent and ban them. However, a court has ruled that these protests are allowed to take place during the Feria and that the city cannot prohibit them. The newspaper „Midi Libre“ wrote of a „slap in the face for Mayor M. Menard.“
The organizers‘ and supporters of the bullfight argument is: „It’s tradition.“ Okay, you can see it that way, but you don’t have to. In France, it was also a long-standing tradition to set up guillotines in marketplaces and behead people. That’s not done anymore.
On the other hand, hundreds of thousands of pigs, chickens, and cattle are tortured every day and kept in terrible conditions just so we can buy meat for 4.99 a kilo, and hardly anyone seems upset.
